Already out in the States, the movie has received good marks for the lead performances and Ritchie’s relative restraint, but make no mistake – the guy still knows how to make things go boom. The multiversal storyline sees a return to the Batsuit for Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck, as well as a comeback for Michael Shannon’s General Zod. This warm-hearted South London comedy-drama from debut filmmaker Dionne Edwards was a crowdpleaser on home turf at last year’s London Film Festival and should repeat the trick at the cinema in what’s shaping up to be a gala year for movies and TV shows set south of the Thames. There are a few versions of Robin Hardy’s landmark folk horror out there, of course, but this is the one the filmmaker swears by. A cult classic in every sense, it follows Edward Woodward’s Christian policeman into a pagan community brimming with dark secrets. In cinemas for one night only, Jun 21 Foto UniversalAsteroid City Asteroid City Wes Anderson follows up The French Dispatch’ with a torch song to families in all their unruly, painful glory. Set in a dusty desert town in a 1950s alive with Cold War paranoia and the thrill of space exploration, Asteroid City’ is an unexpected lockdown yarn in which a group of Junior Stargazers and their families get stuck in situ with only each other, an other-worldly presence, a diner and a martini vending machine to amuse them. It should be another heartfelt showcase for Anderson’s inexhaustible creativity. Think Close Encounters of the Wes’ kind. In cinemas Jun 23 Photograph Lucasfilm Ltd. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny The early reactions at Cannes were subdued but, come on, it’s not every day an Indiana Jones’ movie rolls, boulder-like, into your local cinema. This one reintroduces those old Indy adversaries, the Nazis, in an adventure involving a time-travelling McGuffin and a wisecracking goddaughter played by Phoebe Waller-Bridge to help on the adventure. Expect all the usual exotic locales, chases, archaeological exposition and absolutely no nuked fridges. In cinemas Jun 28 Photograph Picturehouse Entertainment Mother and Son Unfolding over 20 years, this wrenchingly intimate drama follows a single mother from the Ivory Coast struggling to maintain the bond with her sons after immigrating to France. Annabelle Legronne, in particular, has earned raves for her devastatingly realistic performance as the family matriarch whose external toughness is propped up by an increasingly fragile emotionality.
